Except for the
health problems outlined below, all remains well
with Len, his wife Sue, his four sons, Matthew,
Farrell, Andrew and Kyle, his step son Matthew, and
his step daughter Rebecca. Happily, Len is now the
grandfather of six grandsons, Sebastian, Aiden,
Morrison, Adam, Oliver and Zephan.
In 2015, Len
developed a lesion in his right arm caused by a
rare and deadly skin cancer called Merkel cell
carcinoma. The initial Merkel cell lesion was
surgically removed. In 2016, however, new Merkel
cell metastases were found in Lens spine and
several other places in Lens body. This
development would heretofore have probably resulted
in Lens death by now. However, in addition to
radiation of the spinal lesion, Len was able to
receive treatment with newly developed drugs that
enabled his immune system to identify cancer cells
as foreign and thus enabled his immune
system to destroy such cancer cells. This amazing
new treatment has resulted in what Lens
doctors call a complete response
i.e. no active metastases can now be found in
Lens body. His doctors expect that this will,
most probably, remain the case in the future. This
is as close to the word cure as any
oncologist will speak, and Len considers himself to
be truly blessed by this outcome.
Unfortunately,
however, the lesion that developed in Lens
spine (or its treatment with radiation) has caused
damage to some nerves controlling movement of his
left foot -- resulting in a condition known as
foot drop. This foot drop severely
affects Len tennis game, and Len has thus finally
given up any illusion that he can ever win a set
from Doug Luba.
Otherwise, Len
continues to practice commercial real estate law on
a limited basis for old clients, family and
friends. His main interest, outside of his family
(he is known as Zayda to his six
grandsons, and that has become his favorite
identity), friends, and his professional life,
continues to be singing barbershop harmony (he's
still am active member of two choruses and three
quartets).
