OAKLAND, CA

I joined the House of Bamboo as a freshman and have fond memories of all our Friday night "house" parties and hanging around with my friends at the student union.

After graduating, I attended Princeton for a PHD in political science. I moved to California in 1973 and became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. My area of speciality was environmental politics and policy.

I retired 10 years ago. My wife Virginia whom I married in 1977 grew up in Queens though we met in Berkeley. We are blessed with twin grandsons who live near us and who are about to graduate from high school.

We have an apartment in Paris which we visit often.

Barbara (Bobbi) Shulman, previously known as Robert (Bob) Shulman.

I joined House of Bamboo as a freshman in 1963, along with a group of friends from high school, including Jerry Schulman, Marvin Alpert, Mike Solomon, Larry Kantrowitz, Arthur Rosenheck, Steve Rosen, Marty Mitchell, and others. Marty’s brother had been a member of HOB and as he and most of the other members were graduating, we were to be the “new blood” that revitalized the house plan.

I live in North Shore Towers in Floral Park, Queens, from May through November, and I’m in my Florida condo near Ft Lauderdale from December through April.

My son, Michael works for the US foreign service as a diplomat, and has served in South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Armenia, and more recently in Turkmenistan. He lives with his wife and two children in the capital city of Ashgabat, so we don’t get to see much of each other, but his tenure there will be over this summer, and his next job will be teaching a class in foreign relations in Columbia University, still working for the State Department. So for next year at least, I’ll get to see my grandchildren, who are now 7 and 5 years old, more than one or two days a year.
