I
first met Howie when he joined House of Bamboo in
1968. Spins and I were friends ever since. He was
deeply involved in all aspects of HOB especially
Follies and Frolics. We would go to see the
Yankees, Mets and Knicks on a regular basis, along
with an occasional visit to Aqueduct and Roosevelt
Raceway.
We
went on a vacation to San Juan along with Jeff
Brook where we quickly learned that the casino was
not our friend. He met his first wife Robin at
Queens. Elliot Kornreich and Jeff Brook joined me
as ushers at their wedding.
A
few years later Jen was born and I was honored to
be one of her Godfathers. (the other was not
Michael Corleone.) A few years later Kevin was born
and they moved to California. For a while all went
smoothly. Then unfortunately Howie and Robin
divorced but remained friendly.
As
luck would have it Howie met the love of his life
in Priscilla and they had a wonderful marriage for
almost 30 years.
Then
in the late 90s tragedy struck. Kevin was
diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma a rare type of
cancer. He fought valiantly until he passed away.
That left a hole in the every ones heart that never
totally healed.
After
they both retired they traveled extensively
especially to Arizona to see their twin grandsons.
Additionally they took advantage of all the culture
the Bay Area had to offer.
This
year tragedy again struck. In March, Priscilla
passed away. Less than 2 months later we lost Howie
as well. I will miss his sometimes ridiculous
comments on Facebook but most all his friendship.
Rest in Peace my friend
