Barry Tivin was a
member of the House of Bamboo from 1963-1965.
During his HOB days, Barry loved touch football,
track, and partying. He was part of the famous HOB
trio of himself, Paul Garelick and John Jokl, who
remained lifetime friends and who all sadly passed
away in the past five years.
He graduated Queens College in 1965 as an
accounting major, and NYU Law School in 1968. Barry
had a long career in the law and civic affairs of
Queens County before his untimely death at the age
of 62 in the spring of 2006. He was the Secretary
to a Judge of the New York State Supreme Court for
25 years before his passing.
He served as President of the Queens County Bar
Association for 2004-2005, and was a past president
of the Queens County Lodge of the Knights of
Pythias and the Queens County Brandeis Association.
Barry is also remembered for running Come Together
with Paul Garelick for many years, which was a very
successful singles company on Long Island.
Barry is survived by his wife Rochelle who is a
reading teacher on Long Island, his daughter
Kimberly, an attorney who is a Queens County
Supreme Court Secretary, his son Michael who has
just begun the practice of law after graduating
Harvard Law School, and his daughter Jillian who
will be attending SUNY Binghamton.
Barry and I attended NYU Law School together and
continued to be close friends and attended each
other's family events. His funeral service was
crowded with friends, law associates, and what
seemed like most of the judges and elected
officials of Queens County.
Barry will be terribly missed from our world, but
if there is a House of Bamboo heaven I am sure he
will be organizing a fantastic group up there which
we can all look forward to joining.
